How I Use ChatGPT to Proofread Like a Human (Almost)

For nearly a decade, a dear customer and friend quietly helped proofread my sales pages, articles, etc. She was a great help behind the scenes.

Recently, her passing left more than just a silence in my inbox… It left a space in my life.

So I shared the story about her help with my email list subscribers. And one of them, David, kindly offered to step in and proofread my pages too.

See, I truly have the coolest/kindest subscribers ever!

Anyway, I didn’t take David up on his offer… because these days, I’ve been using ChatGPT to help with proofreading and editing.

And it hit me: Maybe it’s time I show you exactly how I do it. It might just help you too. Let’s begin!

What I Use ChatGPT For:

  • Proofreading articles & emails
  • Proofreading reports, ebooks, checklists, etc.
  • Proofreading sales pages & blog posts

Before We Get Started…

There’s something you should know – ChatGPT doesn’t always give you what you want the way you want it.

If you’re using it for proofreading, it could either just fix all the errors and give you the corrected text… but you’ll struggle to figure out what it fixed.

Or it could give you a list of errors and the corrections you need to make – but everything looks so similar you need to really scrutinize and see what the errors are.

That’s why I wrote the prompts below to tell ChatGPT exactly what to do and bold the errors.

This makes life simpler for me as I take ChatGPT’s suggestions and MANUALLY correct the mistakes.

Not every suggestion ChatGPT gives is gospel. Fix what is wrong and keep what you think is fine.

The Prompt I Use For: Proofreading Articles

I’m going to copy and paste an article. Check it for spelling and punctuation errors. Just make a list of the errors and corrections. Bold the spots that you have fixed.

Format:

Error: you probably would be so welthy you wouldn’t need to build a bizness online.
Correction: you probably would be so wealthy that you wouldn’t need to build a business online.

How I Do It:

Step #1 – Copy and paste the prompt from above

Step #2 – Copy and paste your article

Step #3 – Take note of the errors (in bold) and fix them

The Prompt I Use For: Proofreading Reports/eBooks/etc.

I’m going to attach a report.

Step #1 – Copy and paste the prompt (from above) – and attach the file with it.

Step #2 – Click generate… and ChatGPT will scan your report and list out the errors.

The attach file icon is shown below…

You can either attach a PDF, Word doc, text file, etc.

Do note: If your report or book exceeds 2,000 words, you’ll want to split it up into batches of about 2,000 words each and repeat the process.

ChatGPT seems to lose the plot when the content is overly long.

The Prompt I Use For: Proofreading Sales Pages/ Blog Posts

I’m going to copy and paste a URL. Scan it for spelling and punctuation errors. Just make a list of the errors and corrections. Bold the spots that you have fixed.

Format:

Error: you probably would be so welthy you wouldn’t need to build a bizness online.
Correction: you probably would be so wealthy that you wouldn’t need to build a business online.

How I Do It:

Step #1 – Copy and paste the prompt (from above).

Step #2 – When ChatGPT asks for the URL, copy and paste it… like I did for my blog post below.

BONUS PROMPT!

Proofreading is well and good – but if you want ChatGPT to give you suggestions on how you can improve your content…

Just use the prompt below. Use it AFTER you’ve proofread your content.

Review the text for grammar, clarity, and style. Make a list of errors and corrections in the following format:

Error: [original sentence, with the incorrect part bolded]
Correction: [revised sentence with the correction made]

Focus on fixing grammar issues, awkward phrasing, unclear structure, and inconsistent tone while preserving the original meaning.

Using ChatGPT step by step to proofread and fine-tune your content makes the whole writing process way easier.

The best part is that you won’t need to pay anyone to do it for you.

Give it a try a few times, and you’ll be surprised how much sharper and more polished your writing sounds.

P.S. One last thing… you see the featured image right at the top of this blog post? – Well, that was created with ChatGPT too.
